This article reviews unit train loading systems in the coal and iron ore industries. It takes cognisance of the trend in the past decade to install in the iron ore industry a loadout bin fed by a bucket wheel boorn reclaimer and in terms of train loading times compares with the past installations which used a gravity flow systern directly into the rail wagons. The reclaimer/load out systern bin has been widely used in the coal industry with bucket wheel reclainners and alternative forms of reclaim such as front end loaders or tunnel feeder reclaim which in turn have also been used for iron ore. However no reference is made to these alternative systems. The trend continues the cross fertilisation of ideas, sonne successful others not so, all contributing to the general application of bulk solids handling technology. A reclaimer/loadout bin systern is analysed to identity the constraints which limit the current loading times for 220 rail wagon trains from 3.3 h to 3.8 h and compares with the existing grav-ity flow systems which have a loading time range 1.7 h to 1.9 h. Also the potential for either system to load the trains in 1.1 h to 1.3 h is discussed. Reference is made to the coal industry where the train rakes are limited to about 25 hopper wagons and the reclaimer/loadout bin system is effectively the equivalent of a gravity flow system and potentially the trains could be loaded at the faster times with train speeds between 1.8 km/h to 2.1 km/h. The design of bucket wheel reclaimers and wagon loading chutes are not included in this article as well as rail technology regarding wagon rake lengths and controlled train speed systems.
