Since it became standard practice decades ago to have interior lighting components inside vehicles, nothing has basically changed in the methods used to activate or deactivate these lamps. The interaction between man and lamp takes place primarily via mechanically operated switches or buttons. The present trend towards personalising and individualising vehicle interiors as well as new approaches with regard to physiological/psychological aspects are also making new light operating concepts necessary. In some of today's luxury vehicles, more than 100 light apertures can be found on the interior, with the light addressing aspects of both safety and comfort. Direct switching of the light sources through a door contact or manual activation of a switch or button is hardly possible. On the one hand, this would place too great a strain on the driver and not fulfil the comfort requirement in any way - on the other, the space available for switches on the dashboard/central console or roof lining is extremely limited. Intelligent lighting systems are slowly asserting themselves in vehicles. In the front-lighting area, the first applications have gone into standard series production as AFS functions (Adaptive Frontlighting System) and the enormous potential of an intelligent adaptive lighting system has been recognized. Within the framework of further legislative harmonisation, intelligent lighting will also be used as rear-end signal lighting in the mid- to long-term with the introduction of ISL functions (Improved Signal Lighting) in this area., The vehicle interior, which has only moved into focus as a further area of OEM activity in the past few years, opens up new possibilities for innovative lighting systems. The necessity of using intelligent interior lighting systems increases with each new vehicle generation.
