Present car headlamps deliver at maximum four different light distributions: fog beam, low beam, high beam and bending light. Starting from 2005 legislation offers the possibility to deliver further light distributions by AFS headlamps (advanced frontlighting system), e.g. motorway, town and adverse weather light, Whereas innovative optical concepts for future headlamps offer the possibility to deliver further light functions to assist the perception of the driver. An overview over the different future car headlamp systems and their mechatronical surroundings shall be given in a systematic approach. Present headlamp systems fulfil the human needs of supported vision only in a limited way. AFS headlamp systems are first means towards a better adaptation of light distributions to the traffic situation. Active headlamp systems offer the possibility to modulate the light distributions in a three step process: according to traffic situation and human needs, in order to reduce glare, to display information and to mark objects. In the paper an overview over the different possibilities of generating bending light and headlamp levelling is given on basis of mechanical and optical systems. The different possibilities of generating active headlamp light distributions are presented. Active lighting headlamps offer the possibilities to adapt their light distributions in a more specific way to the traffic situations, to the human needs of the driver and to the oncoming traffic. This light flux modulation can be done in different ways. In particular digital projection systems, scanners and their functional structure are discussed.
