A number of methods have been used to try and reduce the high night-time accident statistic, one of which is improved vehicle lights. Most of the work has been concentrated on improving the dipped beam to ensure that it does not cause excessive glare but provides adequate illumination for safer travelling at night. There are a number of problem areas relating to vehicle headlights. It was found that due to inadequate legislation different types of headlight beams which are not compatible are in use and that most headlights are not adjusted correctly. Loading of vehicles also has an adverse effect on the headlight adjustment. The dipped beam shape of a number of headlights was not up to standard and knowledge of motorists and vehicle maintenance personnel on headlights is poor.
