To supply 14V consumers in a 42V PowerNet, DC/DC-power modules will be needed in the future. In co-operation with DaimlerChrysler AG an optimized power module is being developed at the Institute of Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) of Aachen University of Technology (RWTH-Aachen). This paper describes the design of the circuit and mainly the optimization of the selected topology and the control strategies. In 42V PowerNet Systems the current level is reduced resulting in a higher efficiency of electric power generation and distribution. For example, a higher efficiency of the generator can be achieved, increasing from approx. 40% in the 14 V system to about 85% In the 42 V PowerNet. In addition, lower currents lead to reduced power semiconductor chip areas saving manufacturing costs. Furthermore, the higher PowerNet voltage enables new functions in the field of passenger comfort, safety, and fuel economy. For example, integrated starter-alternator systems offering start-stop functionality become now feasible. With this function the engine is stopped whenever the car stops. The starter-alternator works as a motor and produces a high torque to start the engine. While the engine is running, the starter- alternator works as a generator and supplies the car with electrical power. In addition, a major fraction of the kinetic energy can be converted to and stored as electric energy when the car is braking. As a result, a reduced fuel consumption and lower CO2 emission are achieved which is the one of the main driving factors for the introduction of the 42 V PowerNet. In this paper the resonant pole with different control strategies are investigated to supply the 14 V loads in the new 42 V PowerNet. The circuit is explained in detail and two different control strategies are introduced. Simulation results about the dynamic response on a load changing and the estimated efficiency are given. The circuits are now under construction for final test and evaluation.
