Traditional passive protections are not eficient to face up all new critical situations in a dual voltage electrical system due to new failures related to the existence of two powernets. There is not a universal solution for protection strategies valid for any electrical architecture. It relies on the own characteristics of power distribution and control, so all these features must be worked out from the early conception of the architecture. An overall electrical system monitoring and failure anticipation become a must. So, prevention and pre-detections play an important role to avoid unwanted situations like short-circuits or arcing damage. Traditional passive protection becomes inefficient and active protection devices are indispensable. Main highlights from this research are: (1) Traditional passive circuit breakers (like fuses) are not efficient because their actuation is not deterministic. Thus, the number of fuses in the electrical system can be minimised (Fuseless strategy). (2) Interruption time has to be very short. Main drawbacks for the use of relays in protection systems are the high disconnection time and the arcing in contact (it increases the opening time and can damage the contacts).
