The penetration rate of the integrated starter generator (ISG) will depend on the wide range of chances it offers. If it is used only as a substitute for the starter and the alternator, this technology will not be successful. From the literature it is known that the starter generator system in combination with a planetary gear ofters a wide range of usages. It is shown there, that this system can substitute the torque converter of an automatic gear box as well. In the following it will be demonstrated, that also the starting clutch as used for manual or automated manual transmissions can be replaced by this combination of ISG and a planetary gear. Special attention must be paid to the synchronization because of the inertia of the drive train. In the chapter system description the mechanical assembly including internal combustion engine (ICE) with torsion damper, planetary gear, ISG, gear lockup, one way clutch, manual/automated manual transmission is presented. The control architecture for the coordination of all these components is then discussed with focus on the task of the integrated power management (IPC) of the torque manager. A third chapter describes how the system works. Starting the combustion engine, start driving and gear shifting are described. Finally supplementary characteristics of ICE and ISG are presented.
