The increase in personal automobile use and the consumer trend towards larger trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) creates the necessity to implement new technologies in order to improve fuel efficiency and reduce the harmful emissions of these trucks and SUVs. Hybrid electric vehicles have proven to be an effective way to improve vehicle efficiency. A dual hybrid or powersplit offers the benefits of both a series and parallel hybrid, but introduces new controls challenges. This paper analyzes the control of the series-parallel powersplit used in the 2001 Michigan Tech FutureTruck. An electronic throttle controller is implemented and a new control algorithm is proposed and tested. A vehicle simulation has been created in MATLAB and the control algorithm implemented within the simulation. A program written in C has also been created that implements the control algorithm in the test vehicle. The results from both the simulation and test vehicle are presented and discussed. The results indicate that Stock vehicle performance was maintained. Drivability is maintained, shown by the throttle response of the vehicle. Although emissions testing was not performed on the test vehicle it can be deduced that harmful emissions were lowered. The fuel efficiency of the vehicle was improved. Fuel efficiency testing was done on a 50 mile circuit including city and highway driving, as well as elevation changes. Fuel saving of 15 % over stock (note the vehicle weight was increased by 10 %). Brake specific fuel consumption average of 258 g/kW for the two simulations (disregarding vehicle operation above 90 mph).
