The laboratory techniques developed to evaluate the extent of microscopic damage in carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composite test articles subjected to laboratory lightning strike tests are discussed. Assessing the extent of damage of after a lightning strike is a key element in developing many future aircraft composite structures. It is reported that the Electromagnetic Effects Organization of The Boeing Company has an extensive effort underway to develop affordable composite aircraft structure designs that mitigate the effects of lightning strikes.
