The main lines of research on development of sheets for automotive industry are presented. The classification of steel types for sheet forming is discussed and the advanced high strength steels (AHSS) are characterized. There are also presented the ULSAB-AVC Program proposels for a selection of steel grades for the body structure components of the C-class and PNGV-class vehicles that will be made after 2004. The ULSAB-AVC Program is currently in progress and considers those steels that are currently available and zhose that will become available in the nearest future.
