The recent drive towards cost effective lightweighting in the automotive industry has led to strong competition between steel and light density metals. The steel industry's response to alternative lightweight solutions such as aluminum and magnesium has been to develop increasingly higher strength materials while maintaining, or even improving ductility. This paper presents Recent trends in the North American automotive industry towards advanced materials utilization for body-in-white and closure applications to meet the conflicting requirements of light-weighting while maintaining or increasing overall vehicle safety. A review of current trends in sheet steel solutions that meet the conflicting requirements of lightweighting while maintaining or improving energy management, intrusion control, and dent performance is given. Steel is shown to be a strong contender for mass production type operations due to its high elastic modulus, ease of processing, and recyclability together with a multitude of properties, associated with the different steel grades. New steel grades with extraordinary properties such as extremely high work hardening rates, good strength to ductility ratios, and high bake hardenability has expanded the already broad range of applications for steel products. These developments continue to demonstrate the steel industry's capability of providing solutions for the weight reduction and vehicle performance improvement goals, all while utilizing the existing automotive manufacturing infrastructure.
