The conservation of fossil resources and climate protection will have a high priority in the century ahead of us. For road vehicles too, the search is now on for alternative fuels and propulsion systems that can provide an optimum overall solution namely in economy, environmental impact and availability. The TES initiative - consisting of German and European companies - aims to make an active contribution to that. In this association of automotive companies, representatives of the power supply industry and the petroleum industry together with the German federal government, hydrogen has been identified as the future fuel with the most potential. Many challenges to be overcome. These include the further development of future technologies to marketability, the economic large-scale industrial production of regenerative fuels, the clarification of standardisation and licensing issues, the testing of social acceptance and the provision of reliable long-term investment conditions. Field tests involving both customers and the public will be necessary. In this respect the project 'Clean Energy Partnership', planned in Berlin with the assistance of the federal government, should prove a milestone on the road to sustainable mobility. The aim is to demonstrate that hydrogen fuels can be safely and economically used in road transport including the use regenerative energy sources. The location of the project in Berlin should offer the opportunity to an international public as widespread as possible, to obtain an insight into forward-looking energy and propulsion innovations. The project is - as well as the TES initiative - open for further associate partners, also from other industries like e.g. banks and insurance companies.
