Stamped bumpers of the american company, 'Meridian Automotive Systems' (Ionia, MI), are dedicated for cars and trucks (Ford, Ranger, Mazda). Bumpers are of sheet steel 0.075 to 0.103 in. thick, and weighing to 55 lb. - a relatively heavy load for the 13-station transfer units to convey, even at 8 strokes/min. In December 2002, the companys pressroom completed its second servo transfer retrofit to a twin-slide 400-in.-long combined-bed press. Replacing the second of its two aging mechanical transfer systems, supplied with its two Danly presses as original equipment, has allowed the firm to reduce its spare-parts inventory for the transfer systems, and recovery time for repair issues has improved. To upgrade and retrofit new servo transfer systems, Meridian brought in a canadian enterprise, the Orchid Automation, Cambridge, Ontario, to design and install the equipment. Meridian runs the two transfer presses for two 10-hr. shifts a day, performing a die change on each press every one or two days. The transfer profiles of the tools are as well described as the technological feature of the transfer systems and presses. As a result of saving maintenance time in this sector the maintenance efforts in the welding department could be doubled without additional hiring of personal.
