The associated calculations and experiments are of importance to cathodically protected pipelines used for the transmission of water, gas or oil, either underground or underwater. The electric field caused by the cathodic protection (CP) of a buried pipeline, both on the surface and in the soil surrounding the pipeline is considered; at every point the value of the electric potential function Ux,y,z is computed from which the electric field intensity E caused by the cathodic protection system is established. To obtain these results, both the pipeline and the anodes are represented by spherical elements. The precision of this computational approach is validated experimentally. The results are presented as curves and lines of electric field. This method can be very useful, particularly, for research applications, the evaluation of CP design options, the monitoring and control of CP systems and in assessments of the influence of the electric field intensity produced by CP.
