In today's powertrain systems a broad range of semiconductor technologies enable the design of electronics for signal sensing, control and actuation. The devices have to fulfill the special requirements demanded in powertrain applications and the data exchange between the several units have to be optimized to the required function and bandwidth. They have to withstand the harsh environment under the hood and they have to comply with maximum performance needs of a real-time system. The introduced serial buses, Micro-Link Interface (MLI) and Micro Second Bus (MSC) within embedded powertrain application assist the customer within the development phase to scale down increased system complexity. Data exchange to external units now can be performed autonomously without contribution of further CPU load. Synchronization for the data flow is achieved by using the interrupt system with low impact on needed resources and calculation power. Furthermore, the introduction of MLI and MSC offers a smart way of saving system cost by smaller pin counts on the packages for the controller and for the pin count and the housing size for the power ICs. This reduced pin count also decreases the complexity of the whole module. Even 'stand alone' controllers with embedded internal FLASH memory with cost optimized small packages due to the removed parallel external memory could now be easily connected to each other via MLI and share memory portions or even peripheral functions. This offers a smart way of software reuse in the case of a necessary 'face lift' of an ECU which needs more performance due to increased application demands. Last but not least the LVDS design for the high speed MSC interface helps to reduce EMI on PCB level and therefore saves additional effort for getting a fault tolerant system.
