Today, stresses in rotating suspension components under physical load conditions are calculated with assumed distributions of contact forces between tire and wheel since the true distributions are not known. This causes uncertainties in the fatigue evaluation and requires an experimental verification of the obtained results. The paper describes a method to identify the desired force distributions by measured strains on passenger car wheels rolling under different vertical loads with different tire pressures. Wheel loads, tire pressure, and tire dimensional parameters are correlated to the load transfer between tire and wheel, whereby the distributions of the contact forces for reliable stress calculations are derived. Then, in order to verify the results, the identified force distributions are applied to calculate the strains in comparison to the measured strains. Scaled to one resultant wheel load, only small differences are obtained. The force distributions from tires of different height are also similar, but they differ in their extreme values. For combined vertical and lateral wheel loads, the situation is more complex. The identified contact force distributions due to lateral wheel loads cannot be unified completely until now, including all observed influence parameters. Further evaluations are necessary. Parts of the identified forces which are less strictly observable may be altered without significantly changing the strains at the gage points in order to reach unified contact force distributions applicable for comprehensive stress calculations for all sizes of wheels. Nevertheless, force distributions of combined load cases, which are set up by superimposing force distributions for vertical and lateral wheel loads, are already identified and deliver good agreement with measured strains. With the described method stresses in wheels under vertical service loads can be calculated reliably for the first time and concerning tire rim force identification, an efficient tool for determination of parametric design load distributions was developed allowing for fatigue evaluation of wheels, also influencing the further suspension components.
