Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killers of Americans under the age of 34 as well as the leading cause of major brain and spinal injuries. In 2001 over 42000 people were killed and 3 million injured from motor vehicle injuries in the USA. The numbers in EU countries are quite similar. Crash information is critical to understanding causation leading up to the crash, the occupant kinematics and vehicle performance during a crash, and post-crash events. In the US today, the most thorough and accurate sources of crash information come from detailed field investigations of actual, real world crashes with human occupants and for narrowly defined, controlled laboratory crashes of instrumented vehicles with dummy occupants. Because of costs and limitations of current crash investigations and reconstructions the total number of cases available for analysis is limited and skewed toward the more serious crashes. As a result, current databases are recognized to have major deficiencies because of the small number of crashes they contain and the bias of the information. This lack of information of what happens in real-world crashes severely limits the ability of policy-makers and vehicle designers to save lives. One of the greatest changes in the automotive industry has been the rapid transition of the vehicle from the mechanical to electrical control. With the growth of sophisticated safety systems, diagnostic modules are playing a larger role in capturing vehicle information for a limited time before, during and after a crash, usually on flash memory. These modules are referred to as Event Data Recorders (EDR). Valuable information can be obtained from individual crash cases and from aggregate data. But there is a lack of industry data standards, need for proprietary data, liability concerns and concerns about customer acceptance. Data standards remain the major stumbling block.
