This paper introduces a method to determine the energy absorbing capacity of the ship's structure in collision or grounding. Several trials have been made to validate the method for calculation. The effect of various means of design, e.g. double hull, foam filled double hull, austenitic steel in the double hull structure, on the energy absorbing capacity of the structure were investigated numerically and evaluated.
