Controlled limited slip differentials can significantly improve the longitudinal and lateral vehicle dynamic. ESP is an important safety feature, but it slows the vehicle down and impairs the traction. The test results clearly show the potential of active LSDs to improve traction and stability at the same time. Active limited slip devices do not replace the ESP, but can significantly extend the range where a vehicle is controllable for an average driver. Therefore both systems can complement each other, increasing traction, comfort and fun without jeopardizing safety. This makes active limited slip devises additional to TCS and ESP very attractive for vehicles targeted for off-road market (low-mu), and for those that distinguish themselves by their driving pleasure in the marketplace. In general, through further development of CAN bus and sensor technologies, a multitude of development opportunities for controllable limited slip devices will open up. The demand for improved traction and stability requires the use of the full traction potential of the tires. This can be achieved by combining ABS, ESP and engine and transmission management with an intelligent torque distribution system.
