In certain applications exists a demand for a flexible configuration of rolling stock. To great extend the wire-bound information and control systems are influenced by a reconfiguration of a train composition. After an inauguration of a new train composition the information and control networks are also reconfigured. It becames clear that a serial network needs to be routed through a considerable number of contact elements. Those elements need to be of great robustness, therefore a higher voltage is utilized in order to decrease the contact resistance. A CAN communication via such a serial cable follows the prinicple of a powerline communication. The inherit media access control mechanisms of CAN make it more difficult to keep the CAN functionality. The development resulted in industrialized devices, which are able to communicate according to the powerline principle at a bitrate of 125 kbit/s over max. 300 m length.
