Two concepts of radar sensors for the detection of position and state of the driver in the interior of a vehicle are introduced. The first sensor provides the distance between front passengers and the instrumentation panel, and the second determines the frequencies of their heartbeat and breath. Both systems operate in a pulsed mode with an application-dependent frequency. The short pulses, which length determines the resolution of the system, are differently reflected by the 'target' as a function of absorption depth. Distance and movement of the object are computed from the time lapse between outgoing and incoming pulses and from the evaluation of the Doppler effect, respectively.
