Reaching and handling the safety belt were investigated in this work. A preliminary study was first performed by filming 27 car drivers buckling the safety belt up in their own cars. Based on this pilot study, a protocol for a laboratory investigation on the use of the seat belt was defined and conducted. For the laboratory experiment, a mock-up was built enabling the variation of the upper and lower anchorage point locations as well as the buckle position along the belt. Twenty four subjects participated in the experiment: six short females, six average-height males, six tall males and six aged average-height males. They were asked to reach and buckle the safety belt up in 29 belt configurations and to fill in a discomfort questionnaire for each tested configuration. The motions were recorded by tracking 38 surface markers with a motion capture system. The results show that the feeling of discomfort is mainly influenced by the position of the upper anchorage point along the longitudinal axis except for the left hand down reaching strategy. An important observation is that the aged subjects had more difficulty in reaching the seat belt than other subject groups. The influence of the different strategies of seat belt reaching is also reported.
