Increasing driving comfort while reducing fuel consumption - these two are conflicting, even diametrically opposed, objectives in the general development process of a vehicle. Integrated Powertrain Management (IPM) is a contribution to salve this conflict by optimizing the interaction between internal-combustion engine, electrical motor (e.g. Integrated Starter Generator) and automatic transmission. This paper demonstrates the enhanced value of a vehicle featuring corresponding additional functions implemented in software by the example of an ISG - AMT drivetrain. The modular controller concept is flexible and applicable to different combustion engine, electrical motor, transmission, energy storage types and drivetrain configurations. The resulting fuel saving effect is significant.
