Various methods for sensing obstacles in agricultural applications have been tested. A mechanical sensor or light are not suited as these bear the risk of either blocking forage or being incompatible with the rough environment. Ultrasonic methods fail because sound waves are heavily damped by a potential layer hiding the obstacle. A microwave sensor is very promising, although there are several aspects which must be kept in mind as first a low frequency must be used for penetration of a covering layer, second detectability of obstacles degrades rapidly when their size approaches the wavelength and third a covering layer damps microwaves and leads to a delay in travel time, as signal velocity is influenced by the layers permittivity.
