Scratch and mar performance of automotive topcoats has become an increasing customer concern in recent years. The consumer expects that the coating of the car he bought does not lose its good appearance due to degradation of the scratch and mar resistance after only a short time period in service. Therefore, our paper focuses firstly on the influence of weathering on the scratch and mar resistance and secondly, on changes in the visibility of the scratches under the influence of the weather. Examining a series of modern PU clearcoats natural and artificial weathering were done before and after the scratch test. Scratching was carried out using two different scratch techniques. In comparison to other essential coating properties the scratch and mar resistance was most detrimentally affected by the weathering.
