Surfacing of machine elements by welding (joining additional elements or layers, high-frequency welding, selfprolifering high-temperature synthesis, step-by-step padding) was considered as a general method for regeneration of freight car elements. The mechanization and automation of the welding process was exemplified by building up the thrust bearing support plates of a complex shape (above spring riggings) with steel welding wires. A special automatic welder was constructed and placed on a screwing lathe type 1K62 (welding rate 20 m/h to 30 m/h, arc voltage 36 V to 38 V, welding current 450 A to 550 A). The productivity of the automatic unit was 6 to 7 times higher than that of the manual work. Similar effects were achieved when sloped flat surfaces of friction wedges were built-up by a shuttle method of the surfacing by welding.
