Hydrogen engine can smoothly operate at a very lean mixture with low NOx level, whereas the extremely rapid combustion causes backfire and knock. This study proposes the feasibility of high-speed hydrogen engine as a compact power-plant for avoiding an abnormal combustion and for increasing the output power, which can fully utilize the desirable feature of high burning velocity. The combustion characteristics and engine performance were investigated using a short-stroke engine at the speed up to 12,000 rpm. It was shown that complete combustion and good performance were attained even at the high-speed operation for hydrogen fuel. Based on the results at various mixture concentrations and ignition timings, optimal conditions were exhibited for the high-speed hydrogen engine.
