Komatsu and IPA developed a new 46.3 liter 12V-cylinder engine with a bore of 170 mm and a stroke of 170 mm for rolling stock. This engine is designed to establish high-output, low fuel consumption and easy-maintenance to meet the recent market demands. In order to achieve the objectives, high-pressure injection pumps with master-slave electric control units, dual circuit cooling system and ECU monitor system are introduced to this engine. The result demonstrates higher output (Pme: 1.98 MPa) than that of the former model for rolling stock and construction machinery. Moreover, this engine meets ISO 8178-4 F-cycle emission recommendation. After more than one year and a half of field tests, the engine was disassembled and all parts were evaluated. No trouble was found and the lives of main parts such as the crankshaft were evaluated to be more than 1000000 km. The load control of the new concept diesel locomotive type DF200 of the Japan Freight Railway Company requires that acceleration time and deceleration time of the engine are uniform and the engine speed to be stable once the engine speed converges on the planned speed. To comply with the request, lots of programs like ramp time control program were developed and optimized to DF200. Acceleration and deceleration time were set 125 rpm per second. This engine is adopted by Japan Railway Freight Company. This paper describes the features of this engine and the test result.
