Drivers are assured of driving safely and comfortably in a highly sophisticated information environment. This will be achieved with a superior human-machine interface system. Pioneer is developing organic LED displays with the idea that this is becoming a reality. An organic LED self-emitting display presents high contrast when placed in dark rooms. Contrast between lighted areas and non-lighted areas are infinite. Since LCD's cannot control the light coming from the back light, the contrast for LCD's are much lower than that of OLED. This means poor direct visibility for LCD's. Another self-emitting display, VFD has high contrast when placed in dark rooms as well, but when VFD is placed under sunlight, then contrast drops down drastically. All segments, whether lighted or not cannot be seen, so as a result, no one can read the display. In order to avoid this problem, dark filters are used over the front of the VFD panel. This sacrifices brightness in order to get better visibility. OLED has an advantage of having high contrast when placed in a dark room, but in order to keep high contrast in bright environments, reflection from the cathode electrode needs to be reduced. Pioneer has improved OLED contrast in bright environments by utilising a circular polarising film located on the front of the glass panel. As a result, light reflected from the cathode electrode, which acts like a mirror, is reduced. This drastically improves contrast.
