The microstructure and properties of automotive wheels made from a direct electrolytic Al-Si alloy (DEASA) of composition similar to A356 have been studied. DEASA is characterized by self-modification and structural inheritance upon remelting. A lower level of modifier additive is required in the DEASA alloy relative to conventional Al-Si alloys, such as A356, to produce a fully modified structure, resulting in sound castings. Wheels made from DEASA containing 0.17 - 0.21 wt% Fe cost less and have excellent impact and fatigue resistance due to casting soundness.
