The microstructure and properties of wheels made from a direct electrolytic Al-Si alloy (DEASA) have been studied. DEASA is characterized by self- modification and structural inheritance upon remelting. A lower level of modifier additive is required relative to conventional Al-Si alloys to produce a fully modified structure, resulting in sound castings. The wheels made from DEASA containing 0.17-0.21 % (wt) Fe have lower cost and excellent impact resistance and endurance limit due to casting soundness.
