In optimizing the design of a motor drive system for electric vehicles, the aim is to balance the requirements for high efficiency, compact size, low weight and the ability to convert electric energy to mechanical energy and vice-versa over as wide a range of speeds as possible. In spite of the advantage of controlled excitation, DC motors are generally too delicate for use in this type of application. Although harder to use, induction motors are making inroads into electric vehicle applications. Permanent magnet induction motors, particularly the inserted magnet design developed for the Vedelic project, are attracting attention by virtue of their high reliability.
