The HIMR Bus, the HEV made by Hino Motors Ltd., has been successfully used as the passenger transport bus in major cities of Japan including Tokyo and Osaka since 1991. The HIMR bus utilizes 25 VRLA battery module as the power source. Recently, Hino Motors Ltd. has succeeded in developing the new field data collection system to further improve the reliability of the HimR system. It is now possible to measure and record the information directly from the HIMR bus every second, via a mobile phone, by the computer in the laboratories of Hino Motors Ltd. If one understands the condition of the battery based on this information, one can judge the battery life, and can prevent battery troubles. However, the change of the current and voltage of the battery in the HIMR system was very complicated. To investigate the relation between the battery voltage during discharging and the health condition of the battery, the authors measured the I-V profile of the battery using several batteries used for various period. To get the health condition of the battery from the change of the current and the voltage, the authors propose the new method to get the discharge I-V profile. By this method it is possible to collect the data on current, battery voltage, etc. during running which then can be compared with the data collected in bench testing, to estimate the battery life, without removing the battery from the vehicle.
