The paper discusses three trends in the future development of the automobile. Driver assistance (DA), collision avoidance (CA) and full automated driving are pursued in various regions of the world with a differing emphasis. The feasibility and potentials of these concepts are discussed and some reasons for the different approches will be given. The paper describes the BMW concept for driver assistance by various examples. One of the key issues in developing driving assistance, CA or automated driving is the availability of sensors, which can deliver reliably all necessary data for a comprehensive interpretation of the traffic and driving situation under all relevant environmental conditions. Basically LIDAR-, RADAR-Sensors or cameras are suited means to sense the region around a vehicle. However each of these sensors has its specific advantages and drawbacks, which have been discussed in various papers. The current situation is summarized in this paper. An outlook to future developments is given.
