A material for the contact strip of pantographs of high speed electric railway vehicles is required to have the characteristics such as low density, high electrical conductivity, small wear, high toughness and high resistance to arc discharge. We have applied a Cu alloy impregnated C/C composite to the contact strip. This paper describes the preparation procedure of the composite and the results of the characterization of the composite material in laboratory wear tests and field tests. Because carbon repels melted Cu, when it is impregnated into the pores of baked carbon Cu is used in conjunction with Ti. The melted Cu and Ti form an alloy and are tightly bound to carbon walls, so that the Ti- and Cu-containing C/C composite material has higher mechanical strength and electrical conductivity than the existing Cu alloy impregnated carbon materials have. The Ti- and Cu-containing C/C composite has enough characteristics to be applied as a contact strip of pantographs of high speed electric railway vehicles. The composite showed a considerable improvement both in the resistance to the wear and metal migration when compared with the existing contact strip material.
