One of the most important problems relating to high-speed trains is represented by the failure of the supplying system: line and pantograph. Usually, such an event requires the intervention of a special means in order to give assistance. As this means operates over the railroad trackage too, its intervention usually leads to a delay which is not compatible with the expected high-speed service. The objective of this paper is to show an advanced solution of this problem. The study of a system is presented in which electric energy is generated by a generator driven by a gas turbine. The system, placed aboard high-speed trains, shows no gearbox. This kind of system is able to face failures of the normal supplying system (line). It also allows trains to operate over railroad trackages even if electrification is absent and to supply heavy loads such as air conditioning without line feeding (Le.: no connection to the power transmission line). Since short in weight and dimensions, the system itself is contained into a standard-sized car.
