The paper describes the design method of two surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors (PM machines) used in an automatic gearbox of an hybrid electrical vehicle involving analytical and numerical methods. The goal to get a high overload capacity has been reached by keeping the main inductance low. To reduce the overall cost of the PM machines a new magnet configuration has been presented to reduce the magnet volume as much as possible. The geometry has been optimized by evolutionary strategies regarding the peak torque and the minimal magnet volume. The first design has been proved with measurements at a prototype. Further work will involve comperable investigations of the second design.
