Current electric drive technology for electric or hybrid vehicles is mainly based on industrial drive technology and does not meet the needs of the car industry. Industrial drives have a high modularity to meet different applications. Until today a similar approach was made for electric drives in vehicles as only niche markets had to be supplied. For a breakthrough of new technologies like fuel cells or hybrids not only the energy source has to be developed. Also the electric drive technology has to change to high customized designs suitable for volume production to support the market entrance of advanced vehicle propulsion systems. This is very challenging as combustion engines have been developed to a very high standard at low cost. This will be explained with specific data and a short outlook of further potential. Electric drives have to reach at least the same standard at competitive cost.
