Hyundai Motor Company has developed hydrogen fuel cell hybrid vehicles based on its SUV Santa Fe in which polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell system and Li-ion polymer battery are installed. Ambient fuel cell system comprising fuel cell stack, membrane humidifiers, air blowers, hydrogen recycling blowers and the other components of balance of plants has been developed to improve its efficiency and reduce parasitic loss. Integrated fuel cell system into brassboard having the same layout as the Santa Fe vehicle has been evaluated to prove performance and develop fuel cell controllers. The vehicle is driven by 60kW AC induction motor powered by the hybrid system using 33kW fuel cell and 40kW Li-ion polymer battery to improve fuel economy and dynamic responses of the vehicle. The motor is connected via motor controller to battery and fuel cell, in which low fuel cell voltage is raised to battery voltage by unidirectional dc/dc booster. Power demand by user interface is controlled by power control unit which can supervise fuel cell system, battery management system, hydrogen supply and safety, and motor control system. This paper summarizes current status of in-house fuel cell technologies and vehicle development.
