According to his patent applications the author presents the new semicontinuous ship-unloader. Its special technology for unloading bulk materials from ships avoids the disadvantages of conventional unloaders such as bridge grab unloaders or kangaroo grab cranes. It is a technically and structurally optimised, cost and energy saving, lightweight and environmentally-friendly ship unloader suitable for all unloading rates and almost all bulk materials. The unloader consists mainly of a lifting/lowering- and opening/closing-device of the grab, a grab luffing system, an operator's cabin, a boom system, a slewing and a portal travelling device, a hopper, conveyors and chutes, steel structures and a counterweight. Its main advantages are: (1) the minimising of the lifting height and the luffing movement of the grab, and thereby reducing the duration of a working cycle and increasing the unloader capacity, (2) the constant lifting height for a material layer and the constant grab luffing movement are very good prerequisites for the automation of the unloading process, (3) the exactly level luffing movement of the grab avoids unnecessary energy consumption, allows a high grab luffing speed and ensures a high unloading rate, (4) the grab luffing system does not re quire an extra counterweight, (5) the parallelogram in the boom system retains the upright positions of the grab luffing system, the operator cabin, the collecting hopper and improves the balance of the boom swing system, (6) the combination of the large framework and the parallelogram in the boom system increases machine rigidity and reduces its weight, (7) the stationary operator cabin improves operating ergonomics, and ensures the operator's excellent observation of the grab working area, (8) the arrangement of the hopper directly above the hatch confines spillage from the grab to the hatch area, (9) the reduction of the whole machine weight and the good balance of the upper slewing part reduce strains in the lifting cylinder, on the slewing bearing ring, portal, and travelling device, as well as the loads on the quay construction, (10) the structural and technical advantages reduce not only the whole machine weight, but also the installed motor power, the energy consumption, investment and running costs.
