Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) offer a huge potential for commercial vehicle operations and public transport systems. The technologies resulting from worldwide research in ITS need to be efficiently designed in order to encourage more and cost effective deployment within commercial vehicle and public transport industry. It is therefore important to design and model the component and systems technologies based on total systems design techniques that employs the best design route for a given component or system. This paper describes a computer based user focused systems design technique of ITS for commercial vehicle deployment. The methodology treats the design process as a total systematic framework that allows the designer to navigate through an optimum design route that underpins a user focused and cost effective total systems outcome. The systems design methodology starts with a comprehensive definition of user requirements, followed by total systems design requirements and subsequently transforms them into a physical architecture through various stages that engender the examination and analysis of the technologies and generation of alternatives to satisfy those requirements. Implementation of this methodology requires the use of new computer tools which forces the designer to re-think the traditional concept of dealing with component design but seek to promote and obtain time compression of the design process. This paper will conclude by describing an application example using a FRETSET design and modelling framework which is a research toolkit.
