X-by-wire architectures seek to significantly reduce the amount of mechanical components required in vehicles and greatly enhance vehicle performance. To introduce new x-by-wire architectures the choice of a suitable position sensor becomes a key issue. HELLA developed a new non-contacting sensor up to series production maturity. The sensor combines non-wearing linear and angular position measurement with a simple design. This sensor is based mainly on automotive electronic technologies that are already well known. Compared with other sensors known up to now, greater precision is achieved with much less stringent conditions for assembly and ambient factors. Non-contacting angular sensors can be realised for various measuring ranges up to an angle of 360 deg. The design is very simple and compact. The ratiometric processing principle applied ensures temperature stability as well as long-term functional stability. The sensor characteristics can be optimised for specific applications. For instance, using a certain geometric design the sensor can also be used in systems with very stringent accuracy specifications. Thus, the introduced sensor provides an adequate solution for a wide range of automotive engineering applications such as throttle sensors, accelerator pedal sensors, suspension sensors, etc.
