This paper deals with a development effort of a Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system based on the results of the AWARE project and work carried out by Autoliv/Celsius AB. It is built upon a 77 GHz radar sensor scanning in both azimuth and elevation. The sensor detects and classifies moving as well as stationary obstacles. Due to its robustness towards different weather and light conditions it is attractive as the primary sensor in an FCW system. Particular emphasis is put to specify the requirements on a sensor for an FCW system and the testing thereof. The requirements are described, the reasons thereby explained and the results of the performance tests are presented.
