An experimental investigation into the dynamic behavior of the engine timing chain drive has been performed and typical data are presented in this paper. The analysis, based on the sprocket torsion and the chain link load, was performed using three different engines with various valve train concepts. Independent from the chain drive concept, the maximum chain load occurs in the tight span between the crankshaft and camshaft respectively the fuel injection pump for the tested diesel engine. The maximum chain link load reaches from 900N at the DOHC SI engine up to 3800N for the DOHC DI Diesel engine. Nevertheless, the overall level of the relative torsion between the adjoining sprockets of the tight spans is for all investigated engines in the same range between 0.5deg and 0.8deg crank angle. Out of this, the different chain loads could be calculated by using the relative torsion and the chain span elasticity. The harmonic frequencies of the second engine order, especially the fourth, sixth and eighth order are significant regarding the chain drive dynamic behaviour of four-cylinder engines. The dynamic chain load behavior is characterized by the overlay of these harmonic engine orders and the system frequencies of the camshaft drive. Also, significant dynamic effects out of the valve train like the valve spring resonance vibration, could be identified in the chain link load. The sixth engine order excitation out of the valve train, caused by the inertia, is of high importance as well as the fourth engine order out of the fuel injection pump at the Diesel engine. In addition, the potential of chain noise reduction by using a chain tensioner with a 'softer' characteristic is shown as an example for an SOHC engine camshaft drive.
