Electric machines for parallel hybrid cars have a wide load and speed range: One single electric machine must fulfill four functions: it must act as the starter for the combustion engine and as the generator for the on-board power supply, as well as being both drive and brake for the vehicle. In addition these machines should reach the optimal efficiency at the low power range. To meet these requirements, we propose three solutions: flux adjustment, a split winding's arrangement and a squirrel-cage rotor with permanent magnets. The electric machine is placed on the same shaft as the combustion engine, the flywheel and the continuous transmission: hence follows a design with a short iron length and a large number of poles. We discuss calculations as well as measurements.
