One of the variations of the underbalanced drilling method is the Mud-Cap method. This method is ideal for drilling into oil-bearing formations where it is not desirable to have the underbalanced induced hydrocarbon influx produced at the surface. This variation requires a shallower depleted and porous throw away sone to receive oil influx, cuttings, and single-pass drilling fluid. This method was used to drill into the oil reservoirs from barge-mounted rigs in Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela. This project is the first offshore practice of Mud-Cap drilling.
