Underbalanced drilling (UBD) is where the hydrostatic pressure of the drilling fluid is intentionally lower than the pressure of the formation being drilled. A variety of mud weights were made available to allow the pressure of the drilling fluid to be higher than the formation pressure. As the understanding of reservoirs improved and the industry has seen considerable technical improvements and innovative design changes to the surface equipment, rotating control devices and downhole systems which together enable stringent safety levels, there has been a resurgence of interest in UBD. The re-introduction of this technique prolong the life of older reservoirs and allow the development of new fields by reducing the life cycle costs.
