Wärtsilä NDSFinland, has completed shipboard trials with a 5175 tdw paper carrier of 101.9 m length equipped with a Propac propulsion package comprising a 6300 kW medium speed diesel engine, 4.5 m diameter propeller, gearbox and PropacRudder. The PropacRudder features a streamlined torpedo-shaped bulb on the rudder horn immediately abaft and coaxial with the propeller hub. Tests at design draft indicated a 10 % reduction in power consumption for the same speed compared to conventional flap rudder. Pressure impulses against the hull were reduced by 40 %. The propeller-induced noise level is very low across the range of pitch settings with constant propeller revolutions. Noisy face cavitation or hull vibration problems at higher frequencies do not exist. The vessel has proven its good maneuvrability during low-speed operation even in high wind and with a fast current. Other installations will follow.
