For the propulsion of the German class F124 fregate Renk, Germany, has designed, workshop tested and delivered a gear system of combined diesel and gas turbine engines called CODAG. The unit consists of two MTU 20V1163 diesel engines with an output of 7400 kW each and a GE LM 2500 aeroderivative gas turbine of 23500 kW. The gear system is operated and governed by a programmable logic control. The CODAG system is designed for operation in DE mode with one diesel engine, maneuvering mode, GT mode and CODAG mode. The workshop test was performed up to 2000 kW including all functions and monitoring features as well as all transient operations. Significantly noise reduction could be attained. The CODAG propulsion plant is one of the most innovative, flexible and efficient mechanical power transmission systems.
