It is generally acknowledged that a key to large-scale application of liquid molded (RTM/SRIM) composite materials in the automotive industry is the successful development of a fiberglass preforming process. The P4 preforming process has recently been demonstrated as a large scale, low cost, low scrap, high volume (50K units/year), fully automated preforming process. A full scale manufacturing cell has been designed and fabricated, and is currently functioning as a research tool for the Automotive Composites Consortium (ACC). Large, net shape/net size preforms for a structural automotive components have been fabricated. Experimental preforming results and process development efforts are presented.
